Glass has been involved with the stained glass protection and
restoration as part of the Development of the North Manchester Sixth
Form College. We used 9.5mm thick security rated laminated glass fitted using stainless steel and plastic coated balustrade brackets to protect the stained glass.
Laminated glass is two pieces of glass stuck together by a plastic inner layer.
It make the glass difficult to break through and is also used as a safety glass.
The advantage of this protective method is that laminated glass is very scratch resistant and gives a bright reflection.
It offers a good level of protection and is great for low level windows that don't get much damage.
The main disadvantage of using laminated glass is that if an object hits the laminated glass it will smash the area of impact however it will stay in place. The laminated glass will resist even a sustained attack but will need to be replaced afterwards.
